Special Teams Spark Sandites to 39-14 Win at Putnam City West

When Bobby Klinck first arrived in Sand Springs in January of 2020, he held a meeting at HillSpring Church where he laid out his vision for the program to players, parents, and community stakeholders.

In that meeting he stressed the importance of special teams.

“Special teams have the ability to shift a game in either direction,” said Klinck. “Either negatively from failed preparation or positively from precise execution. Hidden yardage is the biggest advantage we will look for in special teams.”

In year four of the Klinck era, it’s clear that he wasn’t just talking. Thursday night at No. 9 Putnam City West (3-4, 0-4), it was the special teams who repeatedly shifted the game in the Sandites’ favor.

A blocked punt, two safeties, and kick returns averaging more than 35 yards were the difference maker in a 39-14 win from No. 5 Charles Page High School (4-3, 2-2) to remain undefeated against the Patriots.

“Coach (Jake) Bray, our special teams coordinator, is the best in the state,” said Klinck.

So when Bray came to Klinck this week and said he thought he could bring some pressure on the Patriot punting unit, Klinck said “let’s go get it, man.”

“Credit to the kids doing a great job and credit to Coach Bray for putting that game plan together and really taking advantage of our special teams.”

The first points of the game came on the Patriots’ second possession when Hunter Wilson blocked Brandon Garcia’s punt out the back of the end zone.

Alex Dudley returned the ensuing kick 40 yards to the Patriot 25 and Jace Arnold cashed in seven plays later with a four-yard wildcat run.

The Patriots’ next punt attempt was fumbled and recovered by Christian Freitus for a touchdown.

Then, Gatlin Gunn returned the next punt 41 yards to the Patriot 14, setting up a 9-yard run by Kenneth Page on the first play of the second quarter.

Two plays later, Owen Floyd forced a fumble that Marcum Sims recovered to set up a four-play scoring drive capped by Page’s 23-yard touchdown run.

Page was the workhorse for the Sandites all night, ending with 26 carries for 138 yards. The senior usually shares the load with Ali McCoy, who is missing this week and next with an injury sustained against Stillwater.

“It’s an absolute luxury,” said Klinck, about having two dynamic running backs.

“They’re stacking the box but we’re still able to get positive yards. We get some positive push up front, but then to have a big time tailback who knows where to hit the holes and then finishes runs - that’s a huge luxury to have.”

With a 30-0 lead just two minutes into the second quarter, it looked like the game would be a runaway rout, but the Patriots had other plans.

After holding Putnam West to only 13 yards in the first quarter, the Patriots exploded for 146 yards in the second quarter to make it a two-score game.

Shyheim Johnson led a methodical 10-play, 86-yard march and scored on a two-yard sneak to get his team on the board.

Then Marriceon Gilstrap recovered a fumbled hike to set up a six-play, 45-yard drive capped by a four-yard run from Dujuan Knight.

The Patriots stymied the Sandites’ last drive of the half and opened the second half with Aaron Edwards blocking a 40-yard field goal attempt by Dawson Puckett.

Jamar McCrary recovered the ball, but the Sandites had successfully eaten up nearly eight minutes of clock to slow the Patriots’ momentum.

“When it’s 30 to nothing, we’ve got to find a way to finish opponents and not let them back in the game,” said Klinck. “But I was glad we were able to have a long opening drive. I would have liked to have gotten some points out of that, but that was a good way to open the second half.”

The next three possessions were a series of turnovers on downs.

Freitus broke up a fourth-down pass intended for Mykel Ford in the end zone.

The Patriots responded by stuffing Arnold on fourth-and-one, but four plays later Johnson dumped an incomplete pass under pressure to give it back to the Sandites.

A 58-yard punt from Puckett pinned the Patriots deep in their own red zone and when Garcia failed to corral an errant long snap, the punter decided to toss the ball out the back of his end zone for the second safety of the night.

Dudley returned the ensuing kick 36 yards and Page cashed in a 36-yard screen pass from Easton Webb three plays later to pad the lead.

Freshman Joseph Farmer put the final nail in the Patriot coffin with an interception and the Sandites ended the night in victory formation.

Webb finished the game 7-of-15 for 83 yards passing. In addition to his 138 rushing yards, Page also had three catches for 57 yards.

Dudley led the defense with six tackles, followed by Floyd and Gunn with five apiece. The defense mustered five tackles for loss while holding Putnam West to only 184 yards, with only 25 yards in the second half.

Johnson was 9-of-25 passing for 125 yards and Knight had 15 carries for 77 yards to pace the Patriots.

Sand Springs improved to a perfect 6-0 all-time against the Patriots, though this was the closest meeting since 2017.

“Coach (Gregory) Johnson did a good job,” said Klinck. “Those kids were ready to go. They had a good game plan, they’re stacking the box. They did a good job taking away what we like to do, so hat’s off to them.”

“I was happy we were able to get some younger kids in to get some meaningful snaps and we had a freshman get an interception.”

“I think our program’s to the point of we’re disappointed in a 25-point win. Our kids know that we left some plays out there and that we need to finish an opponent off.”

Next up for the Sandites will be yet another Thursday night game, this time at home against No. 6 Bartlesville (3-4, 3-1), who fell 14-10 to No. 4 Stillwater in their Week 6 meeting.

Sand Springs has won three in a row against the Bruins, but Bartlesville leads the series 21-18. The series is one of the longest-standing rivalries for either school, having been played 22 consecutive seasons. The two teams have only missed playing each other twice since Bartlesville High School opened in 1982.

Season Primer: Sandite Football Kicks Off Friday vs. Sapulpa

SAnd Springs hosts the highway 97 rivalry trophy after a 2022 road victory at sapulpa.

Since 1952, Sand Springs and Sapulpa have been connected by State Highway 97, but since 1922 something else has connected the two Tulsa suburbs.

Blood, sweat, pigskin, and gridiron have been bringing the two communities together for 30 years longer than the rivalry has had a name - and for the 97th time in the past 102 seasons, Sandites and Chieftains will be at each other’s throats on Friday, August 25th at Memorial Stadium

Both Charles Page High School and Sapulpa High School will open their seasons in Zero Week in the American Heritage Bank Highway 97 Rivalry.

The defending 97 Champs? Sand Springs by way of a 35-21 road win that saw now-senior running back Kenneth Page lit up the scoreboard to the tune of 205 yards and five touchdowns.

With their eighth win in the past nine years, the Sandites finally took their first series lead since 1943 at 46-45-5.

Both teams are looking to take a big step this season. After three consecutive seasons with playoff wins, the Sandites aim for their first State Finals berth since 2015. Sapulpa is coming off back-to-back winning seasons and is looking for its first playoff win since 2005.

Both teams will be eager to start the season on the right foot with a win against their chief rivals before a packed house on statewide television.

The Sandites started the year with a 21-7 half-game loss to Choctaw at the Jenks Football Preview on Friday, August 18th. The Yellowjackets took a 14-0 lead before Easton Webb connected with Wyatt Rutledge, the latest in a long line of Rutledge football stars.

“We were a little bit tired towards the end of that scrimmage, which is natural,” said fourth-year head coach Bobby Klinck, who owns a 22-14 record since arriving at Sand Springs.

“You can run and sprint and do all that stuff, but football shape is different. You’ve got to be ready for it. So I thought there were some plays that we left out there, but for the most part, when we watched film and went back and looked at it, I thought we’re a much-improved football team from last year and I look forward to showing that on Friday.”

Klinck isn’t one to gently test the water toes-first. Choctaw was last year’s State Runner-Up, beating the Sandites 48-29 in the quarterfinals. His team will also take on defending 6A-I State Champion Bixby in the second game of the season.

The Sandites’ strength this season will be their offensive line. Six-foot-four sophomore Ryley Kester is already receiving Division I offers, checking in at 270 pounds. 275-pound senior Tyler Smith stands six feet fall, as does 280-pound senior Marcus Sims. At center, State Tournament-placing wrestler Mason Harris will provide six feet and 260 pounds of intensity.

“Combine that with Ali McCoy and Kenneth Page, we’re looking to run the football,” said Klinck. “There’s no doubt we should be able to. I’ve always told the O-line that we’ll go as far as they go.”

Page was the workhorse for the Sandites last year, carrying the ball 210 times for 1022 yards and 17 touchdowns. McCoy also showed off his speed with 53 carries for 297 yards and 7 TDs.

Klinck expects to split the workload pretty evenly between the two this year. “Those guys love it because they understand that when they’re fresh, they’re a lot better."

Also taking advantage of that powerful line will be 6’4” sophomore quarterback Easton Webb, who was 127-of-203 passing last season for 1,564 yards and 13 touchdowns after winning the starting job in week four.

But despite the football hype, Webb’s primary sport is baseball. In fact, he was recruited by and committed to Oklahoma State University as a freshman before he had ever played a varsity minute.

“In the summer, when you’re that type of athlete, you’ve got to juggle your time between baseball and football,” said Klinck. “And he needs to do that because he excels at both. We’re happy now that it’s coming up on fall and we get him full time.”

“His command, his physicality, the way he’s grown physically. Obviously we’re looking for great things from him.”

Webb also shows strong potential as a dual threat, carrying the ball for nearly 200 yards and four touchdowns last year.

“He’s a lot faster than what people think,” said Klinck. “He definitely wants to throw, but he’s not afraid to tuck it down and put his shoulder pads down when he has to. He’s an all-around type of player and we’re looking for him to make major strides this year.”

Untested for the Sandites will be their receiving corps after graduating their top four from last season.

“Wyatt Rutledge has really come on,” said Klinck. “I think (Caleb) Goodman is going to show some things this year. It’s a bunch of guys that are unproven but we feel that they have the talent to get it done. They’ve just got to prove it on Friday night.”

Defensively, the Sandites will be returning only a handful of their top guys from last season, but Klinck expects big things nonetheless.

“This is a group that they’ve been in the system for a minute and they’re playing fast. We’re going to be aggressive this year. We think that’s kind of our mentality and our nature.”

Gatlin Gunn, Keagan Gilman, Dallas Elifrits, Waylon Jeffers, and Alex Dudley are all expected to make a big impact as some of the top returning tacklers from last season.

As for the leadership this season, the team captains will be Harris, Sims, Dudley, and Gillman.

“We vote team captains. I allow the players to do that,” said Klinck. “They’ve done an unbelievable job. When it’s hot, when guys want to get testy, they’re the ones stepping in saying ‘we can’t be doing this, we’re on the same team.’”

“At the end of practice Alex Dudley’s telling all the scouting guys ‘thank you so much for helping us, it’s a big deal what you’re doing.’ It’s the old adage, ‘when players lead, those are the best teams.’ They’re doing it right now; it’s exciting.”

Sand Springs is hoping to #Sellout97 in what would be the first sellout crowd at Memorial Stadium since it was expanded to a 6,700-seat capacity in 2007. Fans who don’t like crowds will be able to tune in on Yurview (Cox Channel 3). The game will start late at 8:00 p.m. to help dodge the sun.

The Sandites started the game on fire, scoring on their first three field goal attempts for a 7-0 lead before Owasso even got off a shot. Kyler Mann got the Rams on the board with a putback and Trenton Ellison sank a three, but Cason Savage responded with two twos. Davon Richardson scored threes on the first and last buckets of the period to bookend a 14-7 lead.

Marlo Fox got on the board with a three to start the second period and Josh Minney added another three for their biggest lead of the half at 24-11 before the Sandites got into foul trouble. Mann made a traditional three and added two more free throws on the next possession, then Ellison cut it to 24-20 with a four-point play. Fox and Savage added a bucket apiece to end the half 28-20.

The Rams had more rebounds, more steals, and only four fouls to the Sandites’ nine, but struggled with field goal accuracy, going 7-of-20 in the first half.

Sand Springs really began to run away with it in the third quarter, holding their foes to only three field goals for a 43-28 lead. Their biggest lead of the game came at 50-32 in the fourth, but Owasso refused to go down without a fight and won the final quarter. Both teams ended up well into the double bonus with Ethan Oakley fouling out at the 5:21 mark and Mann fouling out at 3:11.

Richardson, a senior University of Central Oklahoma-commit, led all scorers with 23 points, followed by Minney with 16, Fox with 13, and Savage with 10. Mann led Owasso with 14 points, and Ellison was the only other Ram in double digits with 11.

The first round of the State Tournament will be played Thursday at Memorial High School Veterans’ Arena in Tulsa. The semifinals and Championship will be played at the Oral Roberts University Mabee Center. The Sandites’ opponent and game time have yet to be determined.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites fall 66-60 to No. 1 Booker T. Washington - presented by Inkwell Printing

Down by three points with 14.6 seconds left to play, Davon Richardson scored through contact and the Catoosa Activity Center erupted with excitement. Unfortunately for Sand Springs, the University of Central Oklahoma-committed senior was called for charging and the storybook comeback wouldn’t come to pass.

The Class 6A No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School boys basketball team (18-7) won the second half against No. 1 Booker T. Washington (20-5) Friday night in the Area Championship, but was unable to overcome a lopsided second period and fell 66-60. The Washington Hornets will advance to the State Tournament, while the Sandites will get a second chance in the Area Consolation bracket Saturday at 6:30 p.m.

Coverage of the Sandite postseason is brought to you in partnership with Inkwell Printing, the official provider of all Sand Springs athletic gear. Inkwell offers affordable jerseys, spirit wear, and promotional merchandise with fast turnaround and top quality.

Richardson and Marlo Fox drained threes on their first two possessions, then Fox scored two on a steal from Richardson for an 8-0 lead before Kameron Parker got the Hornets on the board with a three. Richardson added two from the charity stripe, but Kansas-commit Bryce Thompson and Oklahoma-commit Trey Phipps scored five on back to back steals. Fox added a second three-pointer, but Washington went on a seven point run and took their first lead on a three from Phipps. Josh Minney hit a layup to end the first quarter 15-15.

Ijai Johnson and Richardson traded threes to open the second quarter, but the Hornets went on a nine point run before Fox broke it up with a three. Phipps rattled off a trio of free throws, then Jalen Breath and Phipps hit layups for the 34-21 advantage. Fox broke up that run with a reverse layup, Thompson scored two more, then Fox scored two from the stripe to end the half down 36-25.

The Sandites were a perfect 5-of-5 on three pointers in the first half and outshot the Hornets all around, but Washington had the Sandites drastically outsized in the paint and came away with six offensive rebounds while giving up none, and won the steal battle seven to two.

Sand Springs narrowly won a back and forth third period after a four point run from Minney cut it to 49-39. A five point Sandite streak in the fourth got them as close as 54-47, but a three from Johnson and a dunk from Breath gave the Hornets a twelve-point lead entering the final two minutes. Sand Springs wouldn’t go down without a fight.

Richardson scored two on a steal from Savage, Thompson hit a free throw, then the Sandites went on a run. Fox hit two free throws, then Richardson scored back to back putbacks on steals from Savage and Minney to make it 60-55 with 44 seconds left.

Savage sent Phipps to the line and the Hornet missed his shot. Minney rebounded and Richardson drew a foul and sank two to make it 60-57. Minney sent Thompson to the line for two and he made both, but Breath fouled Savage on a three and the Sandite hit all three to make it 62-60.

Richardson sent Thompson to the line for one, and it looked like he would have a shot to tie the game up when he scored through contact. But the basket was waved off for charging and he was ejected for his fifth foul as the Sandites’ final hopes evaporated. Phipps and Thompson added three more free throws to end the game.

Thompson led all scorers with 23 points, closely followed by Richardson with 21 points and 10 rebounds for his tenth double-double of the season. Fox and Phipps scored 19 apiece, Minney added 13 for the Sandites and Johnson had 10 for the Hornets.

Sand Springs will return to action Saturday at 6:30 p.m. against the winner of No. 13 Putnam City North (14-9) vs. No. 18 Owasso (12-13). Catoosa High School is located at 2000 South Cherokee Street.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites win Regional Championship 59-51 over Broken Arrow - presented by Inkwell Printing

Saturday night at the Ed Dubie Field House was a special occasion for more reasons than one. The Class 6A No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (18-6) avenged two regular season losses to No. 11 Broken Arrow (18-7), they won consecutive Regional Championships for the first time in school history, and they gave Head Coach Eric Savage his 100th win at Sand Springs.

Coverage of the game is sponsored by Inkwell Printing. Inkwell provides custom apparel for sports teams, businesses, and other organization, as well as promotional items and paper products like brochures and business cards. The Sandites were explosive in the first half, taking a 37-18 lead into the locker room, and used aggressive defense to stave off a second half Broken Arrow rally that went 33-22 in the Tigers’ favor. Junior standout Marlo Fox scored 22 points to lead all scorers, and University of Central Oklahoma-commit Davon Richardson added 21 points and 7 rebounds.

Fox hit a three on the Sandites’ opening possession, then Josh Minney turned a steal into a free throw and the home team never trailed. Ja’ell Talley hit a pair of twos to tie it, but Cason Savage and Fox responded with back to back threes. The Sandites worked their lead up to 17-9 before giving up a trio of free throws to end the period.

The second quarter was even more lopsided as the Sandites ran away with it 20-6 behind a nine point performance from Richardson. Sand Springs took its first double digit lead at the 4:17 mark, then went on an 11-2 run capped by back to back steal and scores from Cason Savage and Richardson to make it 37-18 at the half.

The Tigers battled back hard in the second half and cut their deficit to 46-35 at the end of the third, but the Sandites found their feet in the fourth and kept up for the most part. Minney drew his fifth foul with 1:04 to play, sending Talley to the line for a traditional three that made it 57-51, but Richardson hit a pair of free throws to end the game.

Broken Arrow was led by Talley and Anthony Allen with 14 apiece and Tyler Pinder with 11.

Both teams will advance to the Area playoffs. Sand Springs will play No. 1 Booker T. Washington (19-5) Friday, March 6th at 6:30 p.m. The Sandites are the only team in Class 6A to beat the Hornets this season, doing so 66-62 at home in January, but lost 69-56 on the road two weeks ago. CPHS Basketball: Boys survive Enid 61-52, Fox scores 26 - presented by Inkwell Printing

The Class 6A No. 9 ranked Charles Page High School boys’ basketball team (17-6) survived a feisty team of Enid Plainsmen (8-16) in the first round of the Regional Tournament Friday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, winning 61-52 behind a 26-point effort from junior standout Marlo Fox.

The Plainsmen won the first quarter 13-9, but the Sandites got it together in the second with Fox scoring five to start the stanza. Fox ended the half with 18 points, 16 of which came in the second period, for a 28-27 locker room lead.

Enid came storming back in the third, scoring eight in a row for their biggest lead of the game at 35-29. The home team finished strong with three buckets from Ethan Oakley to tie it at 39-39.

Sand Springs may have won by nine, but it was far closer throughout the fourth quarter. They used an 8-1 run for the 47-40 advantage, but three pointers from Corey Simmons Jr. and Carter Owens cut the deficit to 49-47. Fox scored four in a row from there and the Plainsmen never got within three points again. Desperation fouls allowed the Sandites to inflate their lead in the final minutes.

Fox’s 26 points were one shy of his career-high, and they were enough to lead all scorers. Owens paced the Plainsmen with 20, followed by Telin Phillips with 13. Davon Richardson put up 15 for the Sandites and was one rebound shy of a double-double. Both teams had six players in the book.

The Sandites will host No. 11 Broken Arrow (18-6) Saturday at 7:00 p.m. for the Regional title, and both teams will advance to the Area playoffs. Broken Arrow is 2-0 against the Sandites this season, beating them 63-51 at home in January, and 55-54 on the road in the regular season finale. Sand Springs is looking to win back-to-back Regional titles for the first time in school history.

The Tigers lost their first two meetings 80-78 and 69-67, most recently blowing a ten-point fourth quarter lead in the regular season finale. They made up for it with an 86-81 overtime upset in the game that mattered most, ending the season for the Sandites and extended their own season by at least two games.

The first quarter looked like it could be shaping up for a blowout as six Sandites combined for a 6-of-9 three-point performance and a 20-12 lead. Journey Armstead, Jade Shrum, Madison Burris, Darrian Jordan, Leyshia Morris, and Bayleigh Cheney all hit threes in the quarter. The Sandites also committed a mess of fouls, but Broken Arrow struggled at the free throw line and missed six shots.

Anyone who saw the first two meetings between these teams knew that the Tigers would not go quietly. They won the second quarter 17-16 and used a nine-point streak in the middle of the quarter to take a 29-26 lead before the Sandites got back to scoring.

Armstead went 4-for-4 at the charity stripe to kick off the comeback, then Morris hit the first three of the quarter at the 1:00 mark to regain the lead. The Sandites forced turnovers on the next two possessions, leading to a three from Burris and a two from Jordan to end the half on a ten-point run at 36-29.

The Tigers played their best quarter in the third, winning 23-14. The score saw five lead changes, with Broken Arrow finishing 52-50 after a clutch three from Kelsey Duffey.

Burris hit her third three to kick off the fourth with a nine-point run, but Jada Hytche went on an eight-point run all by herself. Hytche gave her team their biggest lead of the game at 68-63, but Sand Springs battled back and Hailey Jackson hit the game-tying free throw with 3.4 seconds left to force overtime.

Duffey hit a three to open the extra period and the Tigers never trailed from then on.

Taleyah Jones led all scorers with 36 points, and four Tigers scored in double digits. Hytche posted 17, Duffey added 15, and Makayla Adams had 12.

Sand Springs had a more balanced team effort, led by Armstead with 25 points and 8 rebounds. Jackson scored 16 points with 6 rebounds as the only other Sandite in the double.

Broken Arrow will return to action Saturday at 1:30 p.m. against the winner of Muskogee vs. Union. Both teams will advance to the Area playoff.

Next up for the Sandites is Muskogee (1-2). The Minutemen beat the Roughers 69-10 last year and have won three-straight meetings dating back to 2013. Muskogee’s lineup includes one returning State Qualifier in heavyweight Devion Williams.

Wrapping up the evening will be Ponca City (2-5). The Sandites won last year’s dual 47-25 and have won eleven consecutive meetings dating back to 2009. The Wildcats have two State Qualifiers: Ethan Kemble and Shayden Trant.

All four teams competed at the Bobby Lyons Invitational this year. Sand Springs placed 8th, Ponca City was 11th, Sapulpa was 13th, and Muskogee was 15th.

No. 1 Broken Arrow won its 13th-straight District title by a combined score of 158-0. No. 2 Mustang won its district by a combined 214-18. No. 3 Choctaw won its district 204-23. District 6 is the only district left to wrestle, and based on current rankings the Sandites will likely earn the No. 7 seed if they advance to Dual State.

CPHS Basketball: Sandites upset defending State Champs, No. 2 Booker T. Washington

University of Kansas-commit Bryce Thompson dunks in the loss to Sand Springs.

Student section chants of “this is our house” filled the air as Sand Springs toppled the defending 6A State Champions from No. 2 ranked Booker T. Washington (7-3, 4-1) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House. No. 7 Charles Page High School (11-1, 3-1) led by as many as 16 points in the first half before the Hornets battled back, but ultimately the home team held on for a 66-62 overtime win.

Coverage of the game is brought to you through partnership with Inkwell Printing. Inkwell promises unmatched quality at an unbeatable price. They provide school sports uniforms, fan apparel, promotional merchandise, business cards, and more.

Coming into the season, seventh-year Head Coach Eric Savage had only two teams left in the Frontier Valley Conference that he had not beaten. The Sandites crossed No. 6 Union off that list last month, and now they have taken down No. 2 Booker T. Washington as well. The brutally physical game saw a combined 43 fouls, with four foul outs and one injury.

Five-star University of Kansas-signed senior Bryce Thompson led all scorers with 27 points, followed by University of Oklahoma-commit Trey Phipps with 24, but the Sandites had a more balanced team effort, with three players in double digits.

Marlo Fox scored 22 to lead the Sandites for the tenth time this season, followed by Davon Richardson with 18 points and 12 rebounds for his tenth career double-double. Cason Savage had a season-best ten points.

The home team opened on an 8-0 run with baskets from Fox and Cason Savage, and worked the lead up to an incredible 17-2 before the Hornets battled back to end the quarter 18-9.

RaShannon Phillips hit a pair of free throws to open the second quarter, but Davon Richardson kicked off another eight-point run to regain the 15-point lead.

By halftime the Sandites were holding a 33-21 advantage, and Fox added a layup to it to start the third. The Sandites suffered their first big loss just thirty seconds into the half, when Jaeden Hurd had his legs taken out by a Hornet diving for a loose ball. He left the game with a hurt knee and didn’t return. The Hornets went on an eleven-point run late in the third to cut it to 41-39, but Fox ended the quarter with a traditional three.

Josh Minney hit two free throws to start the final stanza, but soon fouled out and another Hornet run tied it at 46-46 with 5:21 left after a three from Thompson. Fox retaliated with a three and the Sandites remained out front till 2:55 when Daren Hawkins fouled Phillips on a three, and Phillips made it a four-point play to tie it.

The Hornets drained the clock till 38.2 when Savage fouled Thompson. Thompson made one and the Hornets took their first lead of the game. Richardson tied it with a free throw, then Savage sent Phipps to the line with five seconds left. The Hornet missed both shots and the game headed to overtime.

Richardson won the tip off and Fox drained a three. Richardson added two more, then Kameron Parker fouled out and Savage made a traditional three for the 61-53 lead before Thompson put the Hornets on the board. Fox added a free throw, Phipps drilled a three, Richardson added a free throw, then Thompson sank a three to make it 63-62.

With 18.6 left Richardson scored two on an inbound throw, then Hawkins added a free throw to secure the win.

Sand Springs will return to action Friday at 8:00 p.m. with a conference road game at No. 10 Broken Arrow (12-1, 4-0). The Hornets will travel to the Bass Pro Tournament of Champions in Springfield, Missouri on Thursday.

CPHS Basketball: Armstead scores 21 in loss to BTW, presented by Inkwell Printing

The Lady Sandites have made two double-digit comeback wins this season, but they weren’t able to do it against the undefeated No. 1 team in Class 6A. Booker T. Washington (11-0, 5-0) rolled to a dominant 65-39 Frontier Valley Conference win over No. 10 Charles Page High School (9-3, 2-2) Tuesday night at the Ed Dubie Field House, despite a game-best 21-point effort from Sandite sophomore Journey Armstead.

The Sandites played aggressive defense throughout the first half and severely limited the Hornets in the first quarter. Armstead scored six points for a 6-5 lead before Wynette Mayberry went on a seven point run to end the period.

Washington rode that momentum to their first double-digit lead at 21-10 after a three from Carrigan Hill and two layups from Aunisty Smith. Armstead scored her team’s first ten points before Bayleigh Cheney put up a three, then Jade Shrum hit a free throw and Hailey Jackson and Sophia Regalado scored in the paint to end the half 34-18.

By the end of the third-quarter the Hornets were up 51-29 and they took a 26-point lead with 4:55 left in the game. Armstead hit a two and Cheney rattled off three from the charity stripe to make it 59-39, then Washington ended on a six-point run against the Sandite third-string.

Armstead led all scorers, closely followed by Mayberry with 20. Smith was the only other player to score in double-digits, putting up 12. Both teams had eight players on the scoreboard, and Jackson had a career-high 18 rebounds.

Washington will return to action next Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. with a conference home game against Owasso (3-9, 1-2). Sand Springs will travel to Broken Arrow (6-5, 2-1) Friday at 6:30 p.m.
