Oklahoma, Sand Springs reach record-breaking COVID-19 numbers

The COVID-19 pandemic in Oklahoma is once again reaching new heights after several weeks of somewhat controlled growth. It took only 11 days for the number of active cases in Oklahoma to go from 20,000 to 30,000 in November. It took 52 days to go from 30,000 to 40,000.

The state is now in danger of another exponential growth period as active cases have gone from 34,004 to 42,956 in only six days. The Oklahoma State Department of Health reported a record-high single-day increase of 6,487 new cases on Sunday, bringing the seven-day rolling average to a record-high 3,899.

More important than the total number of cases is the number of serious cases. 1,746 Oklahomans are currently hospitalized from the virus and 23 new deaths were announced Sunday. 214 deaths have been reported in the past week, bringing the seven-day average to a record-high 30.6. 2,761 Oklahomans have died from the virus since the pandemic began.

58 new cases were reported in Sand Springs on Sunday, bringing the seven-day average to a record-high 33. There are a record-high 344 active cases in the city. 23 Sandites have died from the virus, with two new deaths reported in the past 48 hours.

The State recently launched an online Vaccine Scheduler Portal where Oklahomans can register to receive the vaccine. 110,458 doses have been administered so far in Oklahoma. 271,133 Oklahomans have registered through the portal to receive notifications on eligibility and 13,985 appointments have been scheduled. There have been 22,102,069 cases nationwide since the pandemic began and 371,084 Americans have died from the virus. Oklahoma ranks sixth in the country in average daily cases per capita.

The World Health Organization is reporting 88,383,771 cumulative cases worldwide with 1,919,126 deaths. The United States continue to lead the world, followed by India with 10,450,284 and Brazil with 8,013,708.
