CPHS Football: Sandites head to Shawnee for first time in 21 years

The Class 6A-II No. 8 ranked Charles Page High School football team (1-2) will kick off district action at 7:30 p.m. Friday night in Shawnee against the No. 15 Wolves (0-3). The last time the two teams met, none of the current players were born yet. While the Sandites are hoping to get back to an even record in their third-straight road game, their hosts are simply hoping to snap a four-game losing streak.

Last Week

Sand Springs traveled to Greenwood, Arkansas (2-1) to take on the defending 6A State Champions, and they more than met their match. The Bulldogs prevailed 49-13 with a first-string 42-0 shutout. Caden Pennington was held to a 12-21-45-0 passing performance, but he led the ground game with fifteen carries for 95 yards and a score.

Shawnee was the 25th-straight victim of the defending 5A State Champions from Carl Albert (3-0), falling 47-7 on the road. The Wolves scored their lone touchdown in the first quarter and gave up 33 unanswered points. Heath Hunter passed for 123 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

This Season

The Sandites started out with a 41-28 loss to Mansfield Summit, TX (1-2) and rebounded with a 45-24 victory at No. 13 Putnam City (0-3). Shawnee lost 35-34 to Choctaw (2-1) and 42-7 to Guthrie (3-0).

The Programs

Sand Springs is coming off a 5-6 season, led by twelfth-year Head Coach Dustin Kinard with a 61-62 record. They are riding an all-time program best streak of six-straight seasons with playoff berths. They have been in Class 6A-II since its inception in 2014. The Sandites hold one gold ball, winning the 2A State title in 1966.

Shawnee is coming off a 7-4 season at the 5A level. Head Coach Billy Brown is in his fifteenth season with a 90-71 record and back-to-back playoff appearances. The Wolves won the 5A State title in 2003 and the 3A title in 1973.

The Series (Sand Springs 5-1)

10/30/1992 - The first ever meeting between the two teams went to Shawnee. The Wolves (6-3) earned a 6A playoff berth with a 21-14 home victory over L.D. Baines’s Sandites (3-6). Mike Quimby scored on a one-yard keeper and on a fourteen-yard pass to Aaron Fugate.

10/29/1993 - Sand Springs (6-3) won a 14-0 shutout over Shawnee (2-7) in district action, led by Delvin Jordan with 130 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries. The stifling Sandite defense surrendered only seventy yards of total offense.

11/4/1994 - Sand Springs (4-6) ended the season on a high note with an 18-6 victory, led by Jordan at QB.

11/3/1995 - Dustin Morrow passed 12-16-130 for a touchdown to lead the Sandites (6-4) past Shawnee (2-8) in the regular season finale. Walker Childers carried seventeen times for 96 yards and a score and the Sandites prevailed 20-7.

9/27/1996 - Marc Brown carried for 116 yards to lead the Sandites (4-0) in a 36-0 shutout at Shawnee.

9/26/1997 - Sand Springs (4-0) rolled the Wolves 35-0 thanks to a four-touchdown performance by Pedro Negron. The Sandites ran 33-251 in a mostly grounded attack, recovered four Shawnee fumbles, and blocked a field goal attempt.
